But the universe of The Bane Chroincles in which Shadowhunters, warlocks and demons exist is not self-evident and you need a thorough introduction to it, and maybe also to characters that Magnus Bane interacts with. This is not uncommon for a short story - one of its characteristics actually is in medias res, being thrown right into the action. This immediately becomes a problem because the stories don't establish the setting all too deeply.

Nevertheless, this common project probably also attracts many fans from Brennan's and Johnson's readership, many of which might not have previously read any of Clare's works.

Now, I don't know to what extent Clare was involved in the writing processed of each story, as she is listed as one of the authors of every story - did she help develop the plot of each story, even actually write parts of the story or is she just credited as an author because the characters were invented by her? However, I never felt out of touch with the universe, so Sarah Rees Brennan and Maureen Johnson definitely know Clare's novels very well. However, you don't miss out content- or plotwise if you don't read The Bane Chronicles, making it great supplemental content. Avid readers of Clare's novels will enjoy these short stories because they give backstories to a very interesting character. Some of these have been mentioned in offhand comments in Clare's other works, like the first short story, 'What really happened in Peru'.

It follows Magnus Bane through various adventures that he has had throughout his life. Ten of these short stories were originally published as ebooks, the final story, called 'The Voicemail of Magnus Bane' is a bonus story exclusive to the print version. The Bane Chronicles is a short story anthology, containing eleven stories centered around Magnus Bane, a warlock character that previously appeared in various of Cassandra Clare's works, especially in her six-book The Mortal Instruments series.
